I was out browsing Facebook one afternoon while the kiddos were napping and an ad on the side caught my eye- it was for cloth diaper friendly pants ala Boodle Bottoms! Finding pants that fit over our cloth can be tricky, so I was intrigued. After a look through their site I was sold. And for several reasons. But let's start at the beginning!
Anne and her husband began Boodle Bottoms.com after struggling with finding pants to fit their cloth-diapered babe and realizing there wasn't a product out there to meet that need. (Brilliant!) They used organic prefolds- which are among the bulkiest in my opinion but also the most economical and absorbent- and had to size up if the pants were to fit over the diaper. As many cloth diapering families know, sizing up equals pants that are way too long and rarely fit right anywhere else.
Anne and her husband didn't just stop at a design that would fit, they thought through the entire product and process to make sure their business would be socially and environmentally responsible. Everything is made in the USA. Everything! The fabric, the sewing, the packaging, everything. The fabric is made from certified organic material. Even the tag! Boodle Bottoms are packaged in reusable cotton bags that you can use at home or allow to decompose in 5 months. The boxes to ship them in? 100% post-consumer waste.
Ah, but the shipping you say! (You Environmentalist, you.) Wait for it. They actually buy carbon offsets to minimize their carbon footprint for each shipment that goes out.
I wasn't exaggerating when I said they thought the whole process through!
So what do I love about Boodle Bottoms?
The fit. I tested them on my bulkiest combo(a prefold and wool cover) and it fit perfectly. We use mostly pockets and all in ones- which while trim are much more expensive than prefolds- and I know I'd save even more money than I already do if we switched. Prefolds are a more viable future option for us now that I know there are pants out there that fit. The waistband is also nice and soft against my son's belly(an odd thing that is important to me). You'll notice in the picture to the left the legs are on the long side- that's my error. My son's a shorty and nearing a new size so I ordered up. At 11mos, 18lbs and unknown inches tall, he could actually still wear the 6-12mo size. (Pictured is 12-18mo)
The fabric. One word: soft. Make that two: soft and silky. It's amazing how different organic material feels versus synthetic. You can't miss the superior quality compared to your child's other pants. They are also very well made.
The company. A great product of course is a must, but a great company behind it is even better. In addition to their amazing dedication to 'living lightly', they made time for some philanthropy, too! During the month of December, Boodle Bottoms will donate $1 for every pair of pants sold to The Cloth Diaper Foundation. The Cloth Diaper Foundation is a great non-profit that helps qualifying families begin cloth diapering. Wanting to contribute more? Boodle Bottoms also has a Holiday Charity Package you can purchase! For $3.50 they will gift wrap your purchase and donate $5 to The Cloth Diaper Foundation. That's enough to buy 6 cloth diapers for a needy family!
We really love our Boodle Bottoms and are excited to share their product and company with our readers! I look for more wonderful things from them in the future. (Pants in my size, anyone?) One product they are considering next is jeans. Jeans that fit over cloth? That would be a welcome miracle!
