The Great Sleep: Help.

I'd like to think I'm a pretty decent mom. Since my sister's birth at age 8, I've been a mommy in training turned real mom for 20 years. Along the way I've picked up various tricks of the trade and one of the things that has always come easy for me was getting kids to sleep.

Then came my own children.

And apparently out fell those 20 years of baby sleeping know-how.

Fast forward to our situation: I have a 13 month old that hates bedtime. Hates it. Screaming, thrashing about, hates it. If his daddy or I even walk in to his room at bedtime, the tantrum starts. Naptime? It takes us 5 minutes and he leans into his bed because he wants to be put down and go to sleep. I literally can lay him in his bed and walk away while he falls asleep on his own. It's like Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde at our house!

So I need some help. Some ideas. This is my only rule- no judging anyone else's parenting method. I just want to hear what you do or what you suggest. I'm all for a healthy debate but not on this topic at this time, please.

Thank you!

The only advice I can give is to have a set schedule at night. We almost always do the same thing night after night, when we first started with E, she hated it, I think it took 2 months before she fell into the schedule and stopped pitching the fits. N, well, he's the total opposite, ever since he started using a "big boy" bed, well, he gets excited to take naps and to go to bed, he even climbs in himself. It's crazy how every kid is different and wants different things at bed time. Good luck!

We do the same as Beth. We do the exact same thing every single night. Bath at 6:30 (and if it goes past that he will walk up to me and say 'bath?'). Then PJ's and back downstairs to read a bit before I say it is time for bed at 7:15. He runs upstairs into his room and I nurse him and then put him down totally awake.

Sometimes he goes right to sleep. Sometimes he babbles and then throws everything out of his crib. He cries/screams and I go in and put everything back in, put his soother back in and put him back on his tummy. He goes right to sleep.

For us being consistent is what got us to where we are now.

Thanks, ladies! I think a consistent schedule is something we need to be better at, definitely. We tend to run around a lot in the evening and that contributes to our problem I'm sure. We have gotten better just the past couple weeks and I'm noticing a (good) difference in the day on the naps AND while going to sleep for night is difficult, he is sleeping for longer periods.
No one has any magic beans to sell me?? ;0) Pretty please? Or an easy button?!!
