French Bread recipe

With all of the organic, toxic, gmo type material I've been reading lately, I found myself a little angry in the grocery store at 7am Monday morning. Upon picking up a healthy(er) sounding loaf of bread, I read the label to discover not only was it made with enriched flour but it also had high fructose corn syrup in it.

I was mad.

So I decided I'd get serious again about making my own breads. No longer will I consider it something I do when I feel like it, it will be something I do every week. If we want bread. Haha. I'll be testing out some recipes to share with in the event you'd like to join me on this journey to 'stick it to the man' (aka, cut out more processed food).

French Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups water (70 to 80 degrees F)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • GLAZE:
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds, toasted

Here's the thing you have to know with bread: They won't look perfect the first time, it takes practice. But barring any huge errors, it'll still taste amazing fresh out of the oven! I tell you this because it's still difficult for me- being a bit of a perfectionist I want it to look like the picture!

Speaking of pictures...

This bread was amazing hot out of the oven with butter and garlic on it. I was unsure of the whole roll it out and roll it up step, but I really liked the results. This will be my new go to recipe for a chewy crusty bread. Oh, and I didn't have the sesame seeds or 3 1/2 cups of bread flour- only had 2 1/2- so the other cup was regular all-purpose. Still great!

Great job! That loaf looks delicious!

We stopped buying bread over six months ago. It was a.. "If we want it, we make it. We are NOT buying it anymore".. sort of thing.

It's effort at first when it isn't part of your routine, but over time it just becomes something you do. Like cloth diapering - you don't think twice about it once you're in the groove.

My husband recently posted a recipe to the BEST bread I'd ever tasted.. No kidding.
